Of course you'll become part of the network if you run that software, if you research the science behind the Gnutella or BitTorrent networks, that's exactly how they are supposed to work! You aren't downloading files from some server somewhere, you are joining a network of millions of computers that are all sending and receiving files with the help of one another, It's called decentralized networking.

Everyone SHOULD USE anti-virus, spyware scanner, and and a firewall program. File sharing CAN be safe, but you do have to be careful.

well if you haven't figured it out yet a Trojan is a piece of software that installs stuff on your computer and a worms are viruses that multiply by themselves and spread through P2P, Email Ect...

is limewire pro safe?...the one ppl pay for?
By: overclockerfx. on 08 Aug 08, 08:58:48
agreed... using kazzaa or limewire is just about retarted... when i used to use it years ago (i knew nothing better back then) i got viruses from pretty much every file i got. Luckily i found torrents :D...

Just FUD. Notice that they lowered the antivirus and the firewall settings. It's ONLY THEN that they got big problems. Using Antivirus, firewall, antispyware and common sense is enough. Using LimeWire and KaZaa is reckless. There are tons of free GPL P2P programs that work as good (at the very least) as LimeWire and Kazaa, connecting to the same networks. AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, Firewall and common sense.

Bittorrent is a protocol, and itself has no security risk.
By: neoporcupine. on 24 Jun 08, 08:12:17
Another tip is that a VERY high percentage of software available via bit torrent has malware inserted. Seriously: run downloaded software in a virtual pc / virtualbox or get windows steady state / deepfreeze. If you have to run LimeWire - put it in a virtual PC. If you think your machine is suspect and you want to do internet banking then get a BootCD with Ubuntu or Knoppix and use that.

1 word really, Botnets.

this type of crap only happens with a shitty box. very simple and free programs like avg, zonealarm or comodo, etc. can pretty much prevent this. also, routers have built in encryption that help also.
